Classroom News 9/27

We had another full and fun week!

I really enjoyed getting to meet, and see again all of our families! I hope everyone enjoyed themselves while they got the grand tour of our room!

We completed our first unit of math this week which concludes (for now) rounding, place value, and making change! Next week we start working on our adding and subrtracting skills.

Our star of the week this week was Michael. We learned a little bit more about him. He has an awesome hat from Disney Land!

We continued practicing Read to Someone, Read to Self, and Work on Writing this week during Daily 5. Our class learned how to tune into interesting words while we read which has been fun! Almost every day we add words to our word wall. Ask your student if they added one! Next week we should be able to introduce Word Work! I'm very excited about this! This will give us extra spelling practice during the school day.

We are approaching the end of our Maps unit in social studies. If you need help with directions, ask your kiddo! We will wrap this up next week and move on to something new.

I'm going to try to start posting homework on here. I heard from some parents that this could be helpful. I collaborate with the other fourth grade teachers on homework,

so sometimes we aren't sure until only a day or two before what the homework is. I will try to stay on top of it! For quick reference though here is our normal weekly homework schedule:
Due Monday: Reading log
Due Tuesday: Math
Due Wednesday: Grammar
Due Thursday: Math
Due Friday: Spelling
All homework is assigned the day before it is due. Homework should not take more than 15-20 minutes at night. We try to keep it simple!

Our Jog-a-Thon is next Friday! Students brought home envelopes for collecting pledges and donations yesterday. We ask that they only ask friends and family, and not strangers. Our time on the track is 1:15-2:00. We will do as many laps as we can! This is one of our biggest fundraisers and allows our class to go on field trips and have cool things in our classroom.

Classroom News 9/20

This week was a full week!

We worked tirelessly on rounding big numbers. We rounded to the nearest 10; 100; 1,000; 10,000; 100,000; and 1,000,000! It was tough but I think most of us are mastering the concept. Next week we dive into the world of decimals!

Holly practices Working on Writing.

We introduced several new things to Daily 5. We practiced Read to Someone and learned how to do Work on Writing. Every day we continue to build our stamina!
Here are some pictures of us working hard during Daily 5!

Kayanna shares during our first Author's Chair.

Cesca and Celeste practice Read to Someone.

Chase, Cody, Hunter & Caylie practice Read to Someone.

Austin was our Star of the week this week! We learned about his family, his favorite video games and his favorite sports! We had fun getting to know him a little bit better!

This week we also practiced most of our safety drills. Our class learned how to safely do a room clear in case there is something unsafe happening in our classroom. We also practiced a fire drill and an earthquake drill. Soon we will practice how to appropriately respond to a lockdown drill.

Hopefully we all feel confident knowing what to do in an emergency situation!

Our grading system is finally up and running so be looking for a lot of returned student work next week. I know some students were concerned about getting their spelling tests back. Now that I can enter their grades they will get them back shortly!

We got to visit our buddy class, Mrs. Gericks 2nd grade class, and read with our buddies. It was a lot of fun!

Next week I will post the spelling words on Monday. Also remember that Wednesday is an early release day so teachers and staff can meet in our Professional Learning Communities.

Until next time!

What a great week!

Blake A. was our star of the week! We enjoyed learning about him! Keep an eye out for a bright pink paper letting you know if it is your student's turn!

We started social studies and learned about maps. Ask your student to share with you what they learned about continents and oceans!

We learned about place value and comparing BIG numbers in math. Next week we start learning about rounding. Hopefully you saw them practicing these concepts in their homework.

We worked hard on our stamina during Daily 5. We got all the way up to 15 minutes of quiet Read to Self time! We are still working on Read to Someone. See if your student can explain to you what their job is during Read to Someone. I'm sure they'd love to model it for you (or with you)!

Thank you for getting those signed handbook sheets in! Our class earned a treat from Mrs. Stoneberg!

Please help remind your student to put their name on, and hand in their homework. If they have all their homework turned in by Friday they get to participate in Fun Friday with the rest of fourth grade.

I'll be posting our spelling words and vocabulary words on Monday. Be sure to check back here often for more info!

Classroom News 9/6

What a great first week back at school! We had plenty of get to know you activities and we've started building an awesome community in our classroom.

Some important papers went home this week that I'm hoping all parents and guardians get a chance to look at. On Tuesday the students brought home our classroom procedures agreement for families to read together and sign. On Thursday they brought home our school wide parent handbook to be read and signed. Please return the pages with your signatures! Our class gets rewarded if we get all of those turned in by next Friday.

This week we introduced Daily 5. It's a reading program that helps us build stamina and learn to be better readers! Ask your student about it. It allows them to have a lot of choice about what they want to read. So far the students really seem to be enjoying it! We will be doing Daily 5 along with our Treasures reading curriculum.

We will start our Envision math curriculum next week. We'll be diving right into numeration where we focus on place value. Next week's math homework is directly related to this.

Next week we will be starting our Oregon Social Studies Curriculum as well! It's new this year and should be really engaging! I'm excited to teach it!

Please know that our class is split on Thursdays and Fridays for PE and Music. Half of our class joins Mr. Bova's to head to PE on Thursday and Music on Friday. The other half will join Mr. Grassman's class for Music on Thursday and PE on Friday. Your student should know by now which class they join. Please remind them to wear PE attire on their day!

Our first library will be next Tuesday!

I think that is plenty of information for now! I'm looking forward to Open House on Thursday, September 26th at 6:30. Be prepared to see lots of student artwork from this week when you come!

First Day!

We had an awesome first day! Take a look at all these smiling faces! Make sure to read and sign the room procedures if you haven't already.

Welcome to Room 15!

Welcome to my blog! I'm new to blogging so this will be a fun experience for all of us! My goal is that this will be a spot for families to stay connected with what's happening in our classroom. I'll post homework, schedules, information about field trips, pictures and anything else that parents and guardians may want to know about.

I'm really excited about all that this year has in store! I loved meeting the families that came to Meet the Teacher night and I look forward to connecting with everyone else!

We're going to have a great year!
