Classroom News 10/18

Hello!
Apparently our Friday news is turning into Monday news. Sorry! We've had some busy weeks planning and preparing for upcoming units and field trips.

Our star of the week was Cody! He did a great job sharing pictures of his dog, favorite video games, and favorite books!

In math we continued learning multiples of different factors. We practiced breaking apart to multiply using the distributive property of multiplication. Hopefully your student can demonstrate this for you! We are still working on that this week.

On Tuesday we will have a science lesson explaining invasive species. This information will come in handy for our field trip on Wednesday. If you are planning on attending as a chaperon please be here at 8:00 am on Wednesday, the 23rd. Wear boots and rain gear, just in case!

In Social Studies we made dough maps to show the topography of Oregon. This was great fun! Thank you to the parents who came in and helped this run smoothly! A big THANK YOU to Ms. Rosetta and Cesca for making all the dough! We will get to paint and finish these maps next week. For now we are working in partners on brochures that explain each region of Oregon.

If you still have jog-a-thon money at home please make sure to get that in! The PTO are doing final counts this week.

Speaking of PTO (Parent Teacher Organization), I would love to see more parents at the meetings. The meetings are the second Tuesday of each month and they are very informative! It's a great place to find out about book fairs, fundraisers, activities in the classrooms, and ways to volunteer. The meetings are always brief!

I'll be sending home conference sheets today! If you still need to sign up for a time please fill it out and send it back. If you would like to change your time, fill it out for a new time and send it back. I'm hoping to have times finalized by the end of this week since conferences are fast approaching.

Thank you for reading and keeping up with our class!

Classroom News 10/11

Hello Families! I goofed and am late getting our news from last week up. Sorry about that!

Last week Caylie was our star of the week. We learned about her family and how much she loves her dog! She did a great job sharing.

We have some upcoming events!
Tomorrow (Tuesday, the 15th), we are creating our own topography maps of Oregon out of dough. Pictures to come!

Next week on the 23rd we will be traveling to Elijah Bristow Park to learn about invasive species and turtle habitats. If you'd like to chaperone, please make sure you fill out a volunteer form in the office and let me know. This will be from 8-12.

On October 31st we will have a harvest party from 1-2! If you'd like to help with this please let our room parents know.

Math
We started multiplication in Math! So far we have learned multiples of 2, 5, and 9. We've also practiced drawing arrays to show multiplication. The homework will reflect these strategies.

Reading
We started OBOB this week for the students who applied to participate! You may notice your student reading a bit more than usual if they are involved in this! Whether your student is doing OBOB or not please make sure they are filling out their weekly reading logs and returning those every Monday.

Make sure your students turn in any jog-a-thon envelopes or field trip forms they may still have! Thank you!

Classroom News 10/4

Hello again!

In math we started adding and subtracting using regrouping. The students did pretty well with this concept! It seemed to be review but also a good refresher for our class.

We added new strategies to our Daily 5 wall and we introduced a new choice! We started doing Word Work this week using the computers. During Word Work, five students get onto the computer and practice the spelling words using Spelling City. They can do this from home if you go here. It's a great tool for kids who struggle with spelling or if they just want to bring up their scores.

We wrapped up our Maps unit in social studies with our final test today. Quiz your student on the continent and ocean names! They should also be very helpful with directions next time you take a family trip!

Our Star of the Week this week was Holly! We learned all about her trophies for horse riding and bmx racing! Keep an eye out for the bright pink flyer letting you know when it's your student's turn.

We had our annual Jog-a-Thon today! Whew, do our kids know how to do laps around that track! Thank you to those of you that already sent in your donations. Please have your students return their donations sometime next week! Students will get prizes for having all of their donation envelopes in on time.

Cesca had the most laps in our class!
We could not have had a more beautiful day for the Jog-a-Thon! I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!
